Lemon, lemon, lemon! Lemon is such an amazing citrus that I take for granted! I love decorating my house with lemons, they’re a fun happy color that always freshens up my day. Or when you cut one up to spritz in your water and you are left feeling energized for the day! Or when you decide to clean with fresh squeezed lemon juice in the sink (seriously try this out!), and so the lists goes on! I would have to say my favorite about the lemon is the smell, it’s so fresh and clean. That’s what I pride most of my home in the summer. Windows up, house clean, and smelling like lemon! Ahhhhhhhhh!
Incorporating hot lemon water in something I strive to do. I don’t do it everyday but I do my best to do it every other day. I started this a about five years ago when my passion with food and health first started. I don’t see it as a chore, because its refreshing and I see my body reap the benefits. Below are the 5 reasons I include lemon water into my life!
1. Aids in digestion and detoxification
Because lemon juice’s atomic structure, it is similar to the digestive juices (very acidic) that are found in the stomach. It gets your liver to produce more bile, in return, this helps keep food moving through out your body. Lemon water also helps relieve indigestion or ease an upset stomach. So when I am sick, instead of 7-up, I go for lemon water to get my body on the mend quicker. Lemon also aids in nutrient absorption which means less bloating (hooray!). Lemon water benefits the enzyme functions in your body, stimulating the liver and flushing out toxins. You might catch yourself using the bathroom a bit more often, helping the urinary tract get rid of any unwanted elements.
2. Vitamin C
Since your body doesn’t make vitamin C on its own, it’s important to get enough of it from the foods and drinks you ingest. Lemon is full of it! The benefits of getting this nutrient into your body is that it increases your white blood cell production, this is extremely important for your immune system to function well. As an antioxidant, vitamin C also protects cells from oxidation. Drinking lemon water daily ensures your body gets a sizable amount of vitamin C daily.
3. Keeps away wrinkles
The antioxidants found in vitamin C do double duty in lemon water. They fight damage caused by free radicals, keeping your skin looking fresh. Getting enough vitamin C from your lemon water also keeps the body producing collagen, essential in smoothing out lines in the face. Bye bye wrinkles, hello new face!
4. Helps with those final stubborn pounds
I’m am not saying ANYONE needs to lose weight, but if you increase your lemon water (or lemon in general) it helps you feel full for longer. High pectin levels are found in lemon so it also helps fight hunger cravings.
5. More energy
The nourishing elements like vitamins C and B, proteins, phosphorus and carbohydrates in lemon make it a natural energizing agent. Lemon is one of the few foods out there that are made up of more negative charged ions, giving your body more energy when it arrives to the digestive tract. Plus, the scent of lemon has excellent mood-enhancing and energizing properties. I always find myself happier and motivated after having a big cup of lemon water. Like when I had the meltdown last week!
If having a cup of lemon water is a hassle or something that just ends up sitting there while you drink a diet, another way to incorporate a little more lemon in your life is through your food. I love using lemon as an enhancer in flavor. Here are a few dishes you can add lemon to.
- Squeeze on top of an entree such as fajitas.
