To follow up on my post “ Goal Inspired” things are looking great with my mini goals I set for myself. I have made these little changes in my life and they are making a big outcome. Family time is wonderful in the mornings, and I am slowly de-cluttering my life. As for exercising….I have increased, more so on the weekend, throughout the week. I am still getting the hang of adjusting my time to workout around Evelyn. Now that Noah put our bikes together, it should be much more fun! I was thinking of purchasing a trailer for the back of my bike, so that I may put Evelyn in it and she can snack and color sometimes when she doesn’t feel like riding her bike. We will see in the spring!
Which, speaking of spring, after this weekend I feel like it’s right around the corner. Which is crazy because this winter has been very short. I’m not going to go on a rant about the weather but it still baffles me and I am not complaining. Come spring, you will see my love for plants! I am already planning our garden and a few landscape projects up my sleeve. Can’t wait!
And I have noticed that the days are getting longer which I am SO excited for! Their for a minute, it was so hard for me to get out of bed because of the darkness but light is slowly creeping up on us and I find myself starting to hop out of bed like a superhero, I mean super mom, in the mornings again! Yippee!
To add to my excitement I created a smoothie for all of you this morning. You may be thinking, uh Kayla you already gave us a smoothie earlier this week that looked the exact same. Okay, okay you got me, but it is different kind of smoothie and is new to me that I wanted to share with you. I added turmeric to my smoothie this morning. For those of you that are new to turmeric, it is a spice that looks like cumin but isn’t. A spice that can be used a lot for taste and health benefits but has been sitting in my cabinets waiting patiently for me to use. I always forget about that darn spice but this past weekend, Noah and I de-cluttered our cabinets ( mostly Noah but I was sweeping and mopping!) and ta da there it appeared. A light bulb went off in my head: I am going to use that spice this week gosh darn it.
Yeah mom probs are pretty huge in my life right?
You can purchase at health stores, they don’t have it our local market. Which brings me to the benefits of turmeric….it’s been around for ages and is actually considered a ancient medicine in chinese culture.
What? When I went to research this spice I was so taken aback by all the research that has been done on it solely for medicine purposes. Supported by more than 5,000 scientific researchers, turmeric is known to:
- expanding life span
- preventing and sometimes reversing cancer
- anti ager
- anti inflammatory agent
- lowered blood pressure
- lowers cholesterol levels
- decrease depression
- whitens your teeth
These are just a few snippets that I found and their are many, many, many more. And it is also proven to be better then these drugs that you buy at the convenience store
- Anti-depressants (Prozac)
- Anti-coagulants (aspirin)
- Pain killers
- Diabetes drugs (Metformin)
- Arthritis medications
- Inflammatory bowel disease drugs
- Cholesterol drugs (Lipitor)
You also don’t have the horrible side effects that these drugs can act on your body. Now this is the research that I have done so what you choose for your own course of health is YOUR choice. I am simply trying to find what I can on improving my health through food.
The key to turmeric’s healing is based on the chemical compound called curcumin. You can add turmeric to smoothies, plant based or regular milk, tea, and your food. I could taste a hint of it in my smoothie and it a nice change up, so I plan to add it to all of my smoothies so that I may reap the benefits!
- 1 Frozen banana
- ½ cup of spinach
- ½ cup of ice
- 2 cups of water
- 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
- Place all in a blender and blend till smooth. Best to have spinach at bottom so the ice and bananas will push the spinach down towards the blades.
Have you ever heard of turmeric? What do you add it to? Happy Tuesday!
